Alchemy of Souls (AOS) is a K drama that premiered on tvN and Netflix early this year, the show instantly became popular for its unique fantasy theme, unmatched humour and the undeniable chemistry between the two main leads; Uk and Mu deok. Fans around the world anticipated this series as it dropped weekly until the end in October, check out my review below.

Plot

A powerful sorceress (Go Yoon Jung) in a blind woman’s body (Jung So-min) encounters a man from a prestigious family (Lee Jae-wook), who wants her help to change his destiny.

AOS is the combination of humour, magic, action of swordsmanship, history, love and friendship, toppled up with the beauty of the surroundings of nature; it just made the series such a feel good series to watch.

The drama begins in the present life of a soul shifter, Naksu in the body of another human being, Mu deok and becomes the main character, that serves as the training master of Jang Uk a master mage’s son who has a fascinating story from birth that grew up almost abandoned by his physical father, but reasons are kept within him not to be unravel for the sake of his protection.

Due to the presence of the King’s Star when Uk was born, he may be destined to save their land, Dae Ho, from the evil surrounding the sorceries and soul shifters which becomes more evident and uncontrollable to some who succumbed to power for an everlasting life to live. Together with the help of some friends that are mages and a crown prince, they both work together to protect their land while developing romantic feelings for each other.

Usually I don’t care for period K dramas but this one is very enjoyable, each storyline and character is so well-written and so well thought of that, it really makes for a good story. The cinematography, acting and screenwriting in the show is impressive as well.

There is great chemistry between Mu deok and Uk; the way they understand each other, with their looks, the way they protect each other help and support each other, they each have respect for one another and even though they have this master-student relationship, you can’t tell who is who because they are both learning from each other.

The cast were all well put together; they acted well; they each have fascinating stories and characters that added beautifully to the plot while the development of relationships and characters in the story were fascinating and they will keep you invested.

AOS has all ingredients to keep you hooked: young and good looking characters, a clever modern twist to costumes and make-up, slow-burn romance and friendships, a badass female lead (Mu deok or Natsu fits the description here), some soul shifting magical process that can sometimes go wrong, the typical love triangle, a lot of sense of humour which makes you laugh out loud and heartfelt scenes that will leave you shedding tears!

The series is divided into two parts: Part one aired from June to August for 20 episodes, while Part two titled Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow is currently in production for 10 episodes and is set to premiere in December.

Even though some fans of the show don’t like the fact that the female lead will be changed in the second part due to her chemistry with the male lead, it is also vital for the core plot of the story. I just hope it won’t be a turn off if Jung So-min isn’t in part two. Needless to say, I can’t wait for how Mu deok and Uk’s story will evolve in the second part.

A big WELL DONE to the whole production and post-production team because they put together a dynamic, aesthetically appealing work. The show is written by the Hong sisters and directed by Park Joon-hwa. It also stars Hwang Min-hyun, Shin Seung-ho among others.

Recommended?

10/10. It comes highly recommended because it is easily one of the best dramas released this year. Watch if you liked Korean Odyssey and Arthdal Chronicles. If you have seen this awesome series, agree with me in the comments.
