Review of Book Lovers

This is my second Emily Henry read after Beach Read and I wasn’t disappointed. Book Lovers isn’t a bad read at all.

About

As a badass, hardworking city gal, Nora has been left by multiple past boyfriends for country women who bake and dutifully give birth. She’s the bitch in this trope; career-driven, ambitious and obviously not the kind of woman someone wants to be with in the long term. When her sister suggests a getaway to the country and maybe her own country romance, Nora hesitantly agrees. There she meets a sexy Charlie who is a fierce editor from back in the city.

Thoughts about the book

Book Lovers does many things right with challenging Hallmark movies with a cold girl boss protagonist who, instead of changing her ways or mentality is still appreciated for who she is and what she values, especially by the love interest.

Nora, our main character is complex, deep, funny, and relatable; tough and cold on the outside but very kind and lovely on the inside; she of course is a book-obsessed protagonist. Charlie is a typical romance novel love interest who is obsessed beyond logic with Nora and he just says all the right things. Their chemistry was tangible, their emotions were deep and they pair well with each other plus their banter was quite fun.

What gave the book more depth was its focus on Nora’s issues and relationship with her sister; this helped the story to be a combination of romance and family struggles. Here, the second close relationship is the crazy relationship between the close sisters.

One of the major highlights of the book is the fact that the book doesn’t change Nora or punish her for being ambitious and hardworking. It’s true that men are allowed to be obsessed with their work while women who do the same are too often treated as if they have a disease.

Henry can create some of the best characters and her writing is very refreshing. There are some serious themes addressed in the book; the big city girl in a small town trope which always works, so it was exciting to have her fall for a big city boy as they are both stuck in the small town together. Both Charlie and Nora work in publishing.

Although the book could have been shorter, it was still a hit and it ended happily as the ending was so cute and wholesome.

Conclusion

Book Lovers is rated 4 stars and it checks all the boxes for romance- fun banter, hard ass heroine, a guy who might have his broody moments but isn’t a dick alongside steamy encounters. This book is made for book lovers by a book lover, and it is specially made for the older sister who has a younger sister.
