Mugler: The Fashion Icon

The year 2022 has begun on a very breezy note. On January 24th, the House of Mugler announced the death of Manfred Thierry Mugler, a French fashion designer, creative director and creative advisor of Mugler Fashion House.

They wrote on their Instagram, “It is with deep sadness that the House of Mugler announces the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler, a visionary whose imagination as a couturier, perfumer and image maker empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger everyday.”

He died at the age of 73.

Thierry Mugler was a daring designer who reigned over fashion in the 1980s. He was one of the first designers to champion diversity in his run way shows, that tackled racism and ageism. He was also known for incorporating non traditional models like drag queens, porn stars and transgender women into his fashion shows.

He started his journey into the fashion scene in his early 20s. In the 1970s, Mugler launched his eponymous fashion house and he rose quickly to fame for his “architectural, hyper feminine and theatrical approach to haute couture.” His first personal collection was in 1973 and it was called Cafè de Paris.

At the beginning of his career, he designed looks for famous names like Micheal Jackson, David Bowie, Madonna and Diana Ross, he also designed the famous Demi Moore’s dress from the film Indecent Proposal.

Years later, Mugler’s vintage designed saw resurgence among celebrities like Lady Gaga and Cardi B. Cardi had an extensive friendship with the designer, she was often seen wearing his designs and his brand was mentioned in her song ‘Wild Side.’ Mugler also designed costumes for Beyoncé’s I Am- World Tour which made his brand one of the converted luxury brands for the Generation Z costumers according to Teen Vogue.

In 2019, although retired from his brand, he made an exception to design for Kim Kardashian and the Met Gala under his name “House of Mugler”. His fashion shows were always “extravagant affairs held in arena like environments.”

In addition to this, he was also famous for launching the Angel Fragrance Perfumes which became one of the best selling perfumes of the 20s century. The first perfume appeared in 1992 and it was called Angel, the bottle design which in a shape of a faceted star was created by Brosse Master Glassmakers. In 2005, Alien was created. Both perfumes together produces about $280 million sales annually.

Mugler suffered from accidents that required him to change his appearance and he was a long time body builder. He said in an interview with that Interview magazine, “I’ve done so much in my life. I’ve fought so much. I’m a super hero so it’s normal to have the face of one.”

He was openly gay and he died of natural causes in his residence at Paris on January 23rd, 2022.
