Review of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

from pinterest .

Film legend and ‘60s IT girl Evelyn Hugo rarely granted interviews despite how famous she was, so Monique was surprised when the star actress agreed to do a feature with her, but after meeting her she realized that she was deceived by the actress to write her autobiography but what made Monique special?

I also wanted to know what made Monique different, I didn’t expect the answer I got after reading the book.

About the book;

If it were possible to love and hate a fictional character, that will be the case of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Evelyn Hugo was far from perfect and she wanted everyone to know that with the interview.

Like the title suggests, Evelyn Hugo married seven husbands in the book but all her marriages were strategic right from the first one to the last one.

What I loved about the book;

Evelyn Hugo was a smart and impressive woman and I loved that about her character.

I laughed,my eyes still puffy and tired from crying, “So am I a whore or not?”

“Who knows?” he said. “We’re all whores,really in some way or another”.

Evelyn had flaws, everyone thought she was perfect but she wasn’t and she proved that with the interview with Monique. Evelyn grew up a poor child, so she survived the only way she knew how to: using her body to get what she wanted and it paid off. I mean it even got her an Oscar!

The book gave a lot of insight to the Hollywood industry and the harsh reality of celebrities and how they manage to remain popular and famous. Celebrities marriages fail because they marry for the wrong reasons, like Evelyn. Also the effect of social media and tabloids on celebrity lives both the positive and the negative parts.

I felt sorry for Evelyn, her actions made it seem like she was an heartless person that was just using people to get what she wanted, she married seven husbands just for her career so she won’t go broke and go back to being that poor kid she was before.

All her decisions were based off this, she even almost lost the love of her life because of her selfish reasons. I was happy because she found love amidst all of that.

The book has a queer theme, Evelyn was bisexual and the love of her life was a woman but she didn’t officially marry her but she was happy with her which is really all that matters.

Taylor Reid’s writing skills are pretty impressive, how she created a character so perfect yet so flawed needs to be studied.

One lesson I gained from the book is the harsh reality that everyone is just looking out for themselves. Evelyn puts herself first even when it meant hurting others.

Would I recommend?

Yes! You should add this book to your to be read list. Worth every time spent on it. 4.5 rating.
