Review of All Boys Aren’t Blue

From death comes re birth, a rebirth in thinking, in processing, in living”

One of the wise words I got from the book All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson. So the book is a memoir, a memoir about George. I liked the book immediately I read the author’s note, the note went into details what the book is all about and what the readers should be expecting from the book.

About the book

All Boys Aren’t Blue is a memoir about George Johnson which means he wrote the book and the book is about him. This is the first memoir I have ever read and I really liked the book and how he told us a story about himself,he is a black and queer. He touched all the details; childhood, teens, adulthood everything, I got to see and experience everything George wanted the readers to see, feel and experience from the book.

What I loved about the book

One major theme of the book is struggle with identity. George had two names, Matthew and George so he had difficulty with identifying the name he wanted to bear but he eventually went with George.

I loved the author’s style of writing, it was like he wasn’t just telling the story or just narrating but it was like he was talking to the readers directly which made the book cool. The book also made awareness of black history. There was a whole part of the book dedicated to black history which was cool, I learnt one or two things from that part.

The author went into details like I said earlier, he painted and covered all his childhood experiences vividly which added to the book aesthetics. The author also highlighted some of the struggles black and queer people face right from childhood, how these children sort of have to grow up without having guidance because no one knows how to raise them. George kinda had it worse because he was black and queer.

He had to surpress his ‘queer’ side because of fear, an attribute quite common in the LGBTQ community. Another theme of the book is love. Household and family love goes a long way in raising a child. I think the coolest thing about the book is the fact that I could relate to the writer at some point and in some way.

One major lesson learnt from the book is to always

Live your life.

The atmosphere of the book was kinda too serious but the book was funny at some point too. The book is very enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

All Boys Aren’t Blue is a good read. 3.5 stars, recommended recommend to anyone who is a part of the LGBTQ community or just anyone that likes the reading.
