Proceed but cautiously...

I read this book when I was a bit younger, and I know that it isn’t a much talked about book( which I don’t know why, it is such a dope series). The book is one of the children classics. One of the things that attracted me to the book was the summary of the book.

I have never seen a book so melancholy yet so alluring, so I started reading. A Series of Unfortunate Events is a series of thirteen children’s novel written by Daniel Handler under the pen name Lemony Snicket. The books follow the lives of the Baudelaires;Violet a 14 year old inventor with amazing skills, Klaus a 12 year old reader and the smartest of the three and Sunny, a baby with an unusual teeth.

About the book

The book series starts with the Bad Beginning where the three children loses their parents in a fire and are then placed in the custody of Count Olaf, a murderous relative who attempts to steal their inheritance through various disguises so he orchestrates numerous disasters with the help of his accomplices as the children tries to escape.

One of the peculiar thing about the series is that in every book, it always seem that the children are trapped but they always use their skills and brilliance to escape. As the plot progresses, the children confront mysteries surrounding their family and conspiracies involving a secret organization known as V.F.D. with connections with Olaf, their parents and other relatives.

The series is narrated by Lemony Snicket who dedicates his deceased love interest, Beatrice and he always tries to dissuade the readers from reading the story

One of the coolest things about the book is that the author uses absurdist fiction to tell his stories, the story is also mysterious, full of drama with a hint of comedy. The perfect combination!

There are 13 books in the series and they are in this order; The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room, The Wide Window, The Miserable Mill, The Austere Academy, The Ersatz Elevator, The Vile Village, The Hostile Hospital, The Carnivorous Carnival, The Slippery Slope, The Grime Grotto, The Penultimate Peril and The End. The books were published by Harper Collins Egmont.

The books are set in an alternate, timeless world with stylistic similarities to both the 19th century and the 1930s. Despite the absurdity of the book’s storyline, Lemony continuously maintains that the story is true and that it is ‘his duty’ to document it. He goes off into humorous asides discussing his opinions or personal life. Snicket also translates for Sunny, who in the early books uses words or phrases that only made sense to Sunny and her siblings. There were also illustrations in the books.

The books are honest page turners till the very end. The story also has like a moral compass lesson so it isn’t just entertaining, it is also educative which I think is important while reading a book.

Final Thoughts

Hundred percent recommend the book series from the first to the last book. There is also a Netflix adaptation of the book which is also worth watching. 5 stars! The book series is one of my favorite books to read.
